Day in the Countryside: Hiking in Sentul

Happy hikers

Adam noticed at the start of the year that someone at school was setting up Saturday morning hikes, so a couple of weeks ago we finally signed up for one.

The countryside around Sentul has green hills covered in terraced rice paddies.

We met up at a coffee shop and climbed into a shared car for the ~90 minute drive south to Sentul, where we met our guide. We started off down a path, winding through farms and around green hills.

Walking along the rice paddies

This was a different sort of a hike, because it wasn’t exactly wilderness. There were, in fact, people everywhere going about their daily business of life on farms in the Indonesian countryside. But it was nice to get out of the city and see something different.

We’ve got our borrowed walking sticks and we’re ready for anything!

In particular, it was cool to see the different crops people grow. One popular product of the area was tapioca. We saw it growing, and also the homemade huts where they dry it. I had no idea that tapioca was dried as part of its processing!

The hike turned out to be pretty short – just an hour and a half. But it was enough for our first time trying it out. The last part of the hike was a walk across a river. A little adventure to end on!
